The young men of WALIPP-TSU Preparatory Academy have rich educational experiences on the campus of Texas Southern University. Recently, WALIPP scholars visited the TSU University Museum to observe college classes in Art Appreciation and Theatre Appreciation. The 7th graders toured the Museum which houses Dr. John T. Biggers’ mural masterpiece “Web of Life” and other pieces from the permanent collection. Not only were the WALIPP scholars exploring the museum, they were also on a treasure hunt, looking for six pieces of art work that were referenced in a poem by TSU Professor and Poet Laureate Thomas Meloncon.

Each young man was encouraged to raise Socratic questions about the poet’s selection of words, vocabulary, theme, main idea and other topics being addressed in their Reading classes. Professor Meloncon graciously entertained their questions and provided the WALIPP scholars with insight into the creative writing process. TSU Art Professor Dr. Sarah Trotty was also our host and gave the WALIPP visitors an opportunity to ‘attend’ her Art Appreciation class along with college students. WALIPP will continue to extend the lesson with a Poetry and Creative Writing workshop on the campus of WALIPP with TSU Professor Maya Imani Watson.

WALIPP-TSU Preparatory Academy is a free public charter school located in the Samuel Nabrit Science Building on the campus of Texas Southern University. The all-boys program has open enrollment for students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. An all-girls program will be added next year, and registration is open now. Bill and Mrs. Audrey Lawson and has been a part of the TSU campus since 2007.

Harris County taps experienced hand for public defender

Commissioners Court on Tuesday hired a chief public defender, choosing a lawyer with a record of opening federal public defender offices to establish a Harris County agency to represent indigent defendants.

The court unanimously approved Alex Bunin, the federal public defender for the Northern District of New York, to start a public defender office for the county.
